Irrigation Projects – Kadapa District

Irrigation in Kadapa district is through major, medium and minor irrigation projects. There are 4 major, 5 medium completed irrigation projects in the district. The major irrigation projects are 1) Kurnool-Kadapa canal 2) TBP HLC Stage-I, 3) TBP HLC Stage-II (Mylavaram) and 4) Pulivendula Branch canal with a total ayacut of 2,27,896 acres. The five completed medium irrigation projects are 1.Lower Sagilru Project 2) Upper Sagileru Project 3) Pincha Project 4) Buggavanka Project and 5) Annamayya Project with a total ayacut of 55,625 acres.

Under minor irrigation, there are 1836 tanks under Irrigation and Command Area Development (I & CAD), and Panchayati Raj Department (PR Dept.), with an ayacut of 1,09,050 acres and 25 lift irrigation schemes under I&CA and APSIDC with an ayacut of 11,577 acres. Under Jala Yagnam programme, during the year, the net and gross area irrigated is 1,25,657 and 1,54,607 acres respectively. Ground water irrigates 86% of the total irrigation in the district and it plays a vital role in irrigation.

Government of Andhra Pradesh has taken up irrigation projects on large scale. There are five ongoing major irrigation projects namely 1. Telugu Ganga Project 2. Chitravathi Balancing Reservoir (Lingala canal) 3. Galeru-Nagari Project 4. Gandikota Lift Irrigation Scheme and 5) Hundri Neeva Sujula Sravanti scheme with a total ayacut of 4,23,935 acres. In addition to this, a total of 1,52,000 acres will be stabilized under various schemes.

In addition to the above, Government of Andhra Pradesh has taken up one medium irrigation project (Veligallu project) with an ayacut of 24,000 acres. Under minor irrigation, the Government has taken up 218 tanks under I&CAD and PR Departments with an ayacut of 12,635 acres and 8 Lift Irrigation Schemes with an ayacut of 1394 acres.

The irrigation by ground water accounts for 86% of the total area irrigated in the district, out of which 81% account for bore well and filter point wells and remaining 5% for dug well irrigation. The total area irrigated by ground water is 1,32,871 ha. In all, there are 79,122 ground water abstraction structures in the district.

Further, the Government of AP has contemplated 24 tanks under I & CAD Department with an ayacut of 5581 acres and 34 mini-lift irrigation schemes under APSIDC with an ayacut of 12,246 acres.

II. ONGOING PROJECTS:

A. Major Projects 1. TELUGU GANGA PROJECT:

The T.G.P. now under construction is a diversion scheme from foreshore of N.S.R. Sagar project and is intended to supply 15 TMC of Krishna water to Chennai city for drinking purpose besides creating irrigation Potential of 5,75,000 acres (1.08 Lakhs acres in Kurnool Dist., 1.67 Lakhs acres in Kadapa District utilizing 29 TMC of Krishna Water through Velugodu Balancing Reservoir and S.P.V.B. Reservoir respectively and 0.46 Lakhs acres in Chittoor District and 2.54 Lakh Acres in Nellore District utilizing 30 TMCC of Pennar water through Kandaleru Reservoir). The Telugu Ganga Project Main canal from Km.98.260 to S.P.V.B. Reservoir intended to impound Subsidiary Reservoir-I, Subsidiary Reservoir-II and S.P.V.B. Reservoir and the canal from Subsidiary Reservoir-I to Pennar river intended to drinking water supply is situated falls in the Kadapa District.

2. GALERI NAGARI SUJALA SRAVANTHI:

The Proposal envisages drawl of 38 TMC flood waters of Krishna river from the foreshore of Srisailam reservoir through the existing SRMC and SRBC system up to Gorakallu reservoir by suitably increasing their capacities and thereafter through an independent G.N. flood flow canal up to Gandikota reservoir proposed for 26.847 TMC after crossing Owk reservoir. Thereafter the G.N. Main canal takes off from the foreshore of Gandikota reservoir for a length of 233.021 KM filling enroute two reservoir (viz) Vamikonda Sagar and Sarvaraja Sagar through off-take points in Kadapa District before benching off near Kodur town in to two limbs (viz) Balaji canal and Kailasagiri canal of lengths of 60 KM and 115 KM respectively and finally drops in to Nagari river basin.

Tentative cost of the Project is about Rs.4567.00 Crores as S.S.Rates of 2002-03.

B.Medium Irrigation Projects:

1.VELIGALLU PROJECT: The Veligallu Project is under construction across the Papagni river, which is a tributary to the Pennar river. The Project utilizes 2.671 TMC of the available water and the reservoir storage capacity is 4.650 TMC (gross) and 3.360 TMC (net).

The Project is located near the Veligallu village, Galiveedu Mandal, Kadapa District and is envisaged to Irrigate/stabilize a total ayacut of 24000 acres in the District of Kadapa, provides drinking water to 18 villages in the Galiveedu, Lakkireddipalli, Ramapuram Mandals and Kadapa District. The estimated cost of the Project is Rs.141.42 crores (SSR of 2003-04 year).

2. BUGGAVANKA PROJECT: The Buggavanka Project was constructed across the Buggavanka river, which is a tributary to the Penna river. The Project is locarted near the Ippapenta village, C.K. Dinne Mandal, Kadapa District to irrigarte a total ayacut of 9700 acres in the Districts of Kadapa.

The Project utilizes 0.506 TMC of the available water and the Reservoir storage capacity is 0.506 TMC (gross) and 0.454 TMC (net). The cost of the Project is Rs.38 Crores (SSR of 2000-2001) and the updated cost including improvements and modernization is Rs.39 Crores (SSR of 2002-2003).

3. ANNAMAYYA PROJECT: The Annamayya Project was constructed across the Cheyyeru river which is a tributary to the Pennar river. The project is located near the Badanagadda village, Rajampet Mandal, Kadapa District to irrigate a total ayacut of 22,500 acres in the District of Kadapa (22,500 Acres). The Project utilizes 2.17469 TMC of the available water and the reservoir storage capacity is 2.33948 TMC (Gross) and 2.23948 TMC (Net).

The cost of the Project is Rs.60.44 Crores (SSR of 1996-97) and the updated cost including improvements and modernization is Rs.68.92 Crores (SSR of 2001-02 year).

4. PINCHA PROJECT: The Pincha Project was constructed across the Pincha River which is tributary to Penna River. The Project is located near the Mudumpadu village, T.Sundupalli Mandal, Kadapa District to irrigate a total ayacut of 3773.41 acres. The Project utilized 0.765 TMC of the available water and the Reservoir storage capacity is 0.3276 TMC (gross) and 0.3222 TMC (Net).

The cost of the Project is Rs.0.60 Crores 9SSR or 1954 year).

5. LOWER SAGILERU PROJECT (L.S.R.): The Lower Sagileru Project was constructed across the Sagileru River which is tributary to the Pennar river. The Project is located near the Vaddemanu village, B.Kodur Mandal, Kadapa District to irrigate a total ayacut of 11804 acres. The Project utilized 0.60 TMC of the available water and the Reservoir storage capacity is 0.169 TMC (gross) and 0.166 TMC (Net).

The cost of the Project is Rs.0.51 Crores (SSR of 1954 year). During the year 10/1996 there were damages to the Dam, Canal, Distributaries and Gates due to heavy unprecedented floods and the rectification works have been taken up at an estimated cost of Rs.6.95 crores and completed by March of 2003.

6. UPPER SAGILERU PROJECT (U.S.P.): The Upper Sagileru Project was constructed across the Sagileru River which is tributary to the Pennar river. The Projects located near the Thamballapalli village of Kalasapadu Mandal, Kadapa District to irrigate a total ayacut of 5448 acres. The cost of the Project is Rs.0.046 crores (Rates of 1896 year).

During the year 10/1996 there were damages to the Anicut, canal, Distributaries due to heavy unprecedented floods and the rectification works have been taken up at an estimated cost of Rs.2.32 crores and completed by March of 2001.

III. CONTEMPLATED PROJECTS by Govt of AP:

A. Major Projects:

1. SRISAILAM RIGHT BRANCH CANAL SCHEME:

The SRBC is cleared by the Planning Commission in 1981; vide reference No.2/205/81-INCAD, dt. 16-5-81 for Rs.179 Crores. The same ass revised at 93-94 SSR has worked out to Rs.1186 Crores. The revised cost was approved by CWC vide their letter No.16/27/94-PA(N), dt. 4-7-1994. The latest estimated cost of the scheme is Rs.1979 Crores. Out of this it is estimated to cost of Rs.312.50 Crores beyond Km.141.00 which comes in Kadapa District.

Agreement was concluded with World Bank for A.P.-III Project on 3-6-97 for an assistance of 325 M of U.S.$. (Rs.1286 Crores) against the total estimate cost of 477 M of U.S.$. (Rs.1890 Crores). In this, the component of S.R.B.C. is Rs.939 Crores to create an ayacut of 1,60,000 Acres. The cost revised in 4/2003 is Rs.941 Crores.

B. MEDIUM IRRIGATION PROJECTS:

JERRIKONA PROJECT: This Project is contemplated across the Bahuda River and is planned to utilize 0.734 TMC of the available water. The detailed investigation work of this scheme is to be taken up by Irrigation Circle, Kadapa in receipt of Hydrological clearance from Chief Engineer, Investigation, Hyderabad.

C. MINOR IRRIGATION SCHEMES: 20 No. of Schemes are contemplated for benefiting an ayacut of 5978.60 Acres
