WB funding for water schemes in Kadapa

KADAPA: The World Bank Mission on water supply and sanitation has been implementing schemes to provide potable drinking water supply in villages affected by excessive fluoride content and brackish water besides providing sanitation scheme, Technical Consultant of the WB Mission Sanjay Tahasahasra said here on Saturday.

The World Bank sanctioned a five-year project worth Rs. 100 crore to cover 13 mandals in YSR district till 2013, Dr. Sanjay said.

World BankUnder the Mission, the World Bank granted Rs. 864 crore for schemes in six districts – Kadapa, Karimnagar, Adilabad, Mahabubnagar, Prakasam and Visakhapatnam, he told a press conference here.

Water Supply and Sanitation schemes were being implemented in 414 single village category at an outlay of Rs. 28 crores and 10 multi-village schemes covering 608 habitations with a grant of Rs. 68 crore.

The mission’s objective was to induct professionalism and modernise water supply schemes to develop a sustained and demand-driven scheme.

The mission would develop water schemes, maintain them till 2013 and subsequently hand them over to the people of the village.

He lamented non-availability of Geo-Information System (GIS) mapping, modern simulation techniques and hydraulic modelling and urged Rural Water Supply Superintending Engineer N. Srinivasuu and engineers to deploy modern technology.

The mission’s programme envisaged creation of adequate water storage facility, replacement of old submersible pumpsets and replace the leaking non-metallic pipeline network in areas affected by fluorosis. The sub-soil water flow can be utilized during summer, he said.

The WB Technical Consultant visited N. Palagiri village in Kamalapuram constituency and inspected the progress of water supply and sanitation schemes covering N. Palagiri and 108 habitations, where excessive fluoride content in water led to dental and skeletal disorders.

A 10-km-long pipeline was laid from Papaghni river to N. Palagiri village to supply potable drinking water to a population of 3,600 persons, he said. The people had paid the community participation of Rs. 1.68 lakh, he said.

Seven water supply and sanitation schemes were sanctioned in N. Palagiri, Kotha Gollapalle in Veeraballe mandal, T. Sakibanda in Chinnamandem mandal, Chntakunta in Mydukur mandal, Bayyannapalle and Kandulopalle in Rajampet and S.R. Kandriga in Kodur mandal at an outlay of Rs. 1.50 crores, Dr. Sanjay said. Mr. Srinivasulu and RWS officials were present.
