కృష్ణా-పెన్నార్‌ ప్రాజెక్ట్‌ను రాయలసీమ అవసరాలు తీర్చేవిధంగా సిద్ధేశ్వరం వద్ద నిర్మించాలని రాయలసీమ వాసులు కోరారు. సీమవాసులకు చుక్క నీరు అందని విధంగా 1954లో రాయలసీమకు దిగువ భాగాన ‘నాగార్జునసాగర్‌’గా నిర్మించారు. 23 లక్షల ఎకరాలకు సాగునీరు తెలంగాణ, కోస్తాంధ్ర ప్రాంతాలలో అందుబాటులోకి వచ్చింది. రాయలసీమకు మొండిచెయ్యి మిగిలింది. ప్రత్యేక రాష్ట్రం డిమాండ్‌తో 1969లో తెలంగాణ, 1972లో కోస్తాంధ్ర ఉద్యమించాయి. కానీ వెనుకబాటుతనం నుంచి బయటపడేందుకు రాయలసీమ ప్రాంతంలో 1983లో సాగునీటి ఉద్యమం జరిగింది. వెనుకబాటుకు గురైన రాయలసీమ ప్రాంతంతో పాటు కోస్తాంధ్రలోని ప్రకాశం జిల్లా, …
