Rayachoti (Kadapa), June 25: The Rayachoti MLA, Mr Gadikota Sri-kanth Reddy, alleged that senior Congress leaders had no understanding of Jala-yagnam and were creating trouble only for political existence.
Speaking to mediapersons here on Friday, he alleged that those demanding a change in the design of the Polavaram project had no idea about irrigation projects.
Mr Srikanth Reddy said that it was not proper to make such remarks when the Polavaram project was likely to be announced as a national project.
The Rayachoti MLA said that former chief minister Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy had started the Polavaram project to provide irrigation water to parched lands. He said that YSR had convened an all-party meeting in December 2005 to discuss objections to the project.
Mr Srikanth Reddy said that all parties, except the CPI(M) and the TRS, had attended the meeting and supported the project. He said that leaders who had also not opposed the project in another all-party meeting convened in January 2006, were raising the issue now.
The Rayachoti MLA said that Rayalaseema would suffer heavily if the design of the Polavaram project was changed and added that they would not agree to this.
Mr Srikanth Reddy alleged that opposition parties were not announcing their stand on the Polavaram project due to political opportunism. He said that Rayalaseema Congress MLAs were ready to complain to the party high command, opposing a change in project design.
The zilla parishad vice-chairman, Mr P. Devanatha Reddy, and Lakkireddypalle market committee chairman Sudarshan Reddy were present.
